January is often a month when people start to think about getting back to the gym. Perhaps you are someone who prefers to work out privately at home and are thinking about setting up an at-home gym. If so, there are a few safety guidelines you should keep in mind.

Gym equipment causes many accident-related injuries each year, so safety should play a major role when designing an at-home gym. For example, it is a good idea to have workout machines positioned in a way that allows whoever is using them to observe anyone entering the room.

Ideally, you would want to set up the gym in a room with a door that can lock so that the equipment cannot be accessible to small children or anyone unauthorized to use it. If you cannot lock the door, store barbells, and weights, etc. out of the reach of children. Make sure exercise machines are in their stowed and locked positions. Do not leave them with any wires or cords dangling. As an additional safety measure, you may also want to unplug the equipment when you are not using it.

When you have your gym all set up, it is important to check that whoever uses the equipment is familiar with how to operate it. Many accidents occur when a person tries to use an exercise machine without knowing how it works.
