Trees are undoubtedly a wonderful addition to any property, providing shade, and aesthetic appeal, and even contributing to environmental health. However, as we discussed in our previous article, as much as we cherish these natural giants, they can pose potential risks to our homes, not just below ground but above ground as well. Let’s examine some of these risks:

Overhanging branches can scrape against the roof during windy conditions, causing shingle damage and potential leaks. Additionally, leaves and branches on the roof can trap moisture, leading to the deterioration of roofing materials over time.

Another common issue is that falling leaves, twigs, and debris from trees can lead to clogged gutters and downspouts. When gutters are obstructed, water can accumulate and overflow, leading to water damage on the roof, walls, and foundation of the home.

During storms or due to disease, trees can shed limbs or fall entirely. This poses a significant hazard to nearby homes, vehicles, and even residents.

While trees provide habitats for various wildlife, they can also attract pests that can infiltrate a home. Insects, rodents, and birds can find their way from the trees into the house, posing health risks and causing damage to insulation, wiring, and structural components.

What can be done?

Regular tree maintenance is the key to preventing tree-related issues. Routine maintenance, such as monitoring tree health and addressing potential issues early on, can prevent extensive damage down the line. Regular trimming and pruning are also essential as this not only enhances the tree’s health but also minimizes the risks associated with overgrown branches.
