Condensation is a common thing, especially in older houses. While it is not usually something we worry too much about, condensation can cause problems such as mold, rotten floors, and even fire, if water drips continuously on something electrical. Another problem is that we may mistake a water leak for condensation. So, what can we do to control condensation in the home?
The first thing you can try is reducing levels of humidity indoors. An air conditioner may help with this, or you can use a dehumidifier which will draw water vapor into a tank, preventing it from gathering on surfaces. Too many indoor plants will also create a humid environment so you could reduce the amount you have in the house.
Have a good flow of air going throughout the home. Keeping the house well ventilated helps to reduce condensation, especially in moisture-prone areas like the basement.
Insulating pipes will prevent them from becoming too cold and producing condensation. This method is not advised, however, if you rely on hot water pipes to radiate heat and warm the house.
If you have tried various methods of reducing condensation and you are still seeing an accumulation of water, you may have a water leak. Leaking water can do a lot of damage so do not ignore it. Try to locate possible sources of moisture intrusion and fix the problem as soon as possible.
