This is a time of year when people enjoy being at home with friends and family. Having more people in your home than usual can increase the risk of accidents and injury. So, we thought we would discuss a few safety reminders in our first blog of the month.

Safety around the fireplace. When it’s cold outside there is nothing more comforting than a cozy fire. To keep it a source of enjoyment and not danger ensure that any flammable items you have surrounding the fireplace are removed before lighting the fire. Another important step is to check that the flue is open.

Candles and string lights are another fire safety concern, so never leave candles in a room unattended or position them close to any other flammable materials. Double-check that string lights have no broken bulbs or frayed wires. You may also want to take a few minutes to check that all carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are in good working order.

Keep dangerous objects well out of reach of small children. If you are having family or friends over that have young children, you may want to check that there are no objects such as knives or scissors, etc. lying around within their reach. Even plants such as poinsettias are poisonous, so place them in an area where children and animals cannot reach them.

Yes, being extra vigilant with regard to safety in the home will go a long way to preventing accidents inside your home.
