We are normally conscious of the dangers outside of the home, but how safety conscious are we inside? A large number of injuries are caused every year by accidents that take place at home, so it is a good idea to think of any areas that need improvement in this regard. Let’s look at one safety concern, tip-over dangers.

Furniture pieces that are tall or top-heavy can be in danger of tipping over if not secured properly. Take a bookcase, for example, this should be secured to a wall, and any heavier items should be kept on the lower shelves to prevent them from making the unit top-heavy.

When shopping around for a new piece of furniture, think about how easy it would tip over in your home, especially if a small child were to climb on it. Look for items with a sturdy base. In the case of self-assembly or flatpack furniture items, these usually come with a strap or bracket designed to attach the item to a wall. Be sure you use them.

If you keep your television on a tv stand, make sure you position the television as far back as you can on the unit and try to use a unit that sits low to the ground. Children are also attracted to electrical cables and wires, so make sure these are hidden away and out of sight.

As you look through your home, you will, no doubt, see other areas that could be a potential safety hazard, these few suggestions will give you an idea of what to look out for.
