Dust mites are microscopic creatures that are found in every home. While they are harmless to most people, for others, they cause allergies resulting in misery. Although you will not be able to get rid of dust mites completely from your home, there are many things you can do to control their numbers. Here are some suggestions:

Dust and vacuum throughout your home on a regular basis. Wipe surfaces using a slightly damp cloth so that you prevent the redistribution of dust onto other surfaces. If possible, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and vacuum all soft furnishings, as well as floors.

Another place where dust mites can thrive is bed linens. Thankfully, high temperatures will eliminate them from bedding, so wash linens at a minimum temp of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If this temperature is too hot to wash your bedding, then place them in the dryer on high for ten minutes which will also get rid of them.

Keep humidity levels low in your home. Dust mites enjoy a humid environment, so keeping the humidity low indoors and making sure you have good ventilation throughout the home will help reduce their numbers. An air purifier will help if dust mites are airborne. However, as most dust mites are not generally found in the air, it will not drastically reduce their numbers.

So, if you are worried that dust mites are the cause of your allergies, why not try these simple suggestions and see if they help?
